Find someone to be your coach!

Coaching… what images does that word bring to mind?

  • Your child’s soccer coach demonstrating a move or cheering from the sidelines?

  • The birthing coach who taught you how to breathe during labor?

  • Your acting coach from high school who had you run through your lines over and over and over?

The types of coaches are numerous. In addition to athletic coaches, birthing coaches, and acting coaches, consider performance coaches, skills coaches, career transition coaches, business coaches, executive coaches, voice coaches, life coaches, and wellness coaches. In almost any area of life you can seek and find a coach.

Coaches work one-on-one and with groups. Coaches volunteer and coaches get paid. A mastermind group could be considered a group who coaches one another. We need all kinds of coaches.

What do coaches have in common? They help us grow and achieve our goals – whether that involves excelling at a sport, giving birth, nailing a performance, or _______________________ you fill in the blank.

The International Coaching Community describes “the essence of coaching” as:

  • To help a person change in the way they wish and helping them go in the direction they want to go.

  • Coaching supports a person at every level in becoming who they want to be.

  • Coaching builds awareness, empowers choice, and leads to change.

  • It unlocks a person’s potential to maximize their performance.

  • Coaching helps them to learn rather than teaching them.

What are the essential characteristics of successful coaching? Coaching literature and experts suggest the following components of effective coaching:

  • Establish a trusting relationship

  • Be respectful and honor confidentiality

  • Help clients honestly assess their situation, strengths, resources, and more

  • Ask good questions

  • Listen well

  • Communicate clearly

  • Establish clear expectations

  • Focus on one goal at a time

  • Support and encourage

  • Challenge to grow

  • Be consistent

What else would you add?

Who has coached you? Who have you coached? I suggest that at any given time in a chosen endeavor, we will achieve more if we enlist the help of a coach. Someone who will help us learn, grow, and achieve. A coach might include someone we hire, or a mentor who has traveled the journey ahead of us, or even a friend who can lend an ear and provide wisdom and encouragement. When you fulfill the role of coach, you also learn and grow.

If you are seeking a coach to grow as a nutrition communicator, check out my coaching page: https://www.nutritioncommunicator.com/one-on-one-coaching. My desire is to guide you on your journey as a communicator. I want to help you create effective communication that captures your signature style. Not sure what your signature style is? I would love to help you discover it.

No matter where you are on your journey, I would love to come alongside and help you define and achieve your goals. During my years teaching future nutrition professionals at Purdue University, one of my favorite “jobs” was coaching students throughout their communication projects and watching them grow and flourish! It would be my honor and pleasure to do the same for you!

I provide one-on-one coaching to assist in the creation of all types of projects at any stage of development: completing needs assessments, creating lesson plans, writing speeches, creating slides and visual aids, developing food demos, videos, blogs, webinars, newsletters, and more. I also coach presentation delivery, media interviewing, and demonstration skills. Invest a little time in expert coaching, save a lot of heartache, and produce a better product! How can I help you?
