Did you know that we produce enough food to feed everyone in the world?

How?? Through innovations in agriculture.

If we have enough food to nourish everyone, why is there still world hunger?

Many reasons.

In this post, we will explore World Food Day, hosted each year by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and what they tell us about the innovations and barriers to feeding the world.

What is World Food Day?

World Food Day is October 16th, celebrated every year in honor of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations on this date in 1945. The FAO’s mission is to eliminate world hunger and improve nutrition.

World Food Day was established in 1979 and first observed in 1981. Today, it is celebrated in more than 150 countries. Each year, a theme is selected to raise awareness about hunger, malnutrition, and sustainable agriculture. This year’s theme is Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.

Celebrating World Food Day means creating awareness of and participating in FAO’s work to eliminate hunger, improve nutrition, and inspire positive change.

What innovations today help feed the world and nourish tomorrow?

According to the World Food Day website, innovations in agrifood systems include…

digital advisory services, data and information systems, improved seed varieties and biotechnologies, farmer field schools, cooperative models, traditional land and water practices, and new approaches to production, markets, finance and distribution. Innovation also includes reducing risk before crises emerge.

Here’s a great example of how innovation today nourishes tomorrow:

“Together, our efforts to foster innovation can build agrifood systems that are more stable, more inclusive and more resilient – capable of nourishing people today while protecting the resources future generations depend on.” FAO, 2026.

What barriers stand in the way of achieving our goal to eliminate world hunger?

FAO identifies several barriers to feeding the world, including global conflicts, economic instability, and climate shocks. Additionally, they cite the following:

  • Nearly 1 in 3 people globally cannot afford a healthy diet (2025).

  • Globally, about 13% of all food produced is lost between harvest and retail, and another 19% at the retail and consumer levels.

  • Global investment in agrifood research and development has decreased significantly in recent years.

What can we do to make a difference?

The World Food Day website lists many actions that governments, the private sector, farmers, academia, civil society, and individuals, including young people, can take to make a difference.
