Which dinner companions in the photos above are connecting?
That may seem like a trick question. The group in the top photo is “connected” … but not with each other.
How often have you witnessed the scene in the top photo? I see it. All. The. Time.
How common are phones present at your meals – at home or away?
Do they enhance or detract from the mealtime experience?
Which photo above depicts your ideal of meaningful connections?
Our recent posts have explored the importance of disconnecting from our phones and how to accomplish a digital detox. In this post, we will explore why making meals a digital-free zone is important and how that can be a strategic first step in implementing a digital detox.
Keep in mind that being screen-free at meals is more than putting away your phone. It includes turning off the television, which has been a mealtime distraction for decades.
Why should I do a digital detox at meals?
When we are focused on screens or responding to texts and other digital messages, we are not focused on our meal or our eating companions. This lack of focus can have negative consequences.
When focused on a digital device, we are less aware of what we are eating, how much we are eating, and the physical sensations associated with our appetite and our hunger and fullness.
When screen-free, we can be mindful about what we are eating; our senses can be tuned into the flavors, scents, textures, sounds, and appearance of our food. We are more likely to find pleasure in the eating experience.
Additionally, we can be more aware of our physical sensations of hunger and fullness.
Mindfulness leads to greater meal satisfaction and a reduced tendency to overeat.
When looking at a screen or digital device, it is impossible to maintain eye contact with others simultaneously. We cannot be tuned into their facial expressions and body language. We are also less likely to pay attention to their words or tone of voice. They could easily feel ignored.
When we are screen-free, we are free to focus on the people we are eating with. Companionship at meals is the most desired aspect of shared mealtimes. Therefore, intentionally being screen-free should be a priority as it can greatly enhance our experience of eating with others.
To be seen and heard by a friend or family member is highly valued. Put away the phone. Turn off the TV. Engage others in conversation. Create meaningful connections.
How can creating digital-free meals be a first step in a digital detox?
An all-out digital detox may feel too challenging or even impossible. If that is true for you, start smaller. Select the times and places where digital devices are the most distracting, or even harmful:
Driving should be a definite candidate for a digital detox. At least in your hands.
The bedroom after bedtime is another smart choice that reaps benefits in improved sleep.
Meals with others that are free from the distractions of digital devices allow for making meaningful connections.
Observe other times and places where digital devices promote wasting time, mindless behaviors, or loss of connection with others. Choose to free yourself from the pull of digital devices one step at a time.
Is it time for a digital detox at meals? Being screen-free enables you to be a mindful eater and an engaged eating companion. You will reap the benefits of greater meal satisfaction, improved communication, and stronger relationships.
