Have you noticed how often headlines and social media scream at us to fear food?

Fear of…food making us fat… food-related diseases… ultra-processed food… non-organic food…

So much fear! Is it helpful? I don’t think so.

When I talk about food, I prefer to focus on fulfillment, not fear. Food fulfills us on so many levels. In this post, we will explore 5 facts about food that help us focus on how it fulfills us, not on fears that don’t support our health or well-being.

Food Is Fuel.

Food fulfills our need for energy and nourishment.

Academic coursework in nutrition focuses on this fact about food. Food nourishes us. It provides energy to work, play, and grow. It provides building blocks for the human body. It provides nutrients to support bodily functions.

Fear of food often stems from a fear of calories. Calories are not to be feared. They simply measure the energy in food that fuels us.

Food is nutrition. Food is fuel. Food is fulfilling.

Food is Flavor.

Food fulfills our appetite in addition to our hunger.

Taste is the primary driver of food choice. We eat with our senses – the sight, smell, sound, texture, and taste of food. These sensory factors make food delicious as well as nutritious.

Ignore the fear-mongers who tell us “if it tastes good, it must not be good for us.” Flavorful food is not to be feared. It is to be enjoyed.

Food provides a feast of flavor. Flavorful food is fulfilling.

Food is Fun.

Food fulfills our desire to celebrate.

It helps us celebrate birthdays, holidays, and personal milestones. Food helps us celebrate pretty much everything. Food and festivities go hand in hand.

Fun food and food prep ideas can also make ordinary days extraordinary:

  • Pancake faces and shapes for breakfast.

  • Ants on a log (celery with peanut butter and raisins) for a snack.

  • S’mores made over a campfire.

  • Make-your-own pizzas for supper or a snack.

Cooking is fun. Eating is fun. Food helps us create joyful experiences.

Don’t fear food. Enjoy it. Fun foods are fulfilling.

Food is Fellowship.

Food fulfills our need for connection.

When people gather, food is commonly shared. The word companion comes from Latin, meaning with bread. Friends and family break bread together.

Food enhances human interactions at meals and gatherings. Research shows that eating together builds trust, increases feelings of happiness, and strengthens human bonds via the brain's natural bonding chemicals.

Loneliness and isolation contribute to depression and poor mental health. Eating together is an antidote, reducing depression and supporting long-term mental health.

Food connects us. Fellowship with food is fulfilling.

Food is Family.

Food fulfills our need to celebrate our heritage.

Ask someone about fond childhood memories, and you will likely hear stories of shared meals and celebrations, favorite foods, and cooking with a parent or grandparent.

Families have food traditions rooted in the people and places that define who we are and where we come from.

Food is culture. Food is memories. Food is family. Celebrating our food heritage is fulfilling.

Banish the fear of food. Focus on how it fulfills us.

“Food for the body is not enough. There must be food for the soul.”

~ Dorothy Day
